Hey Sheffield Garden Walkers stop by and visit the landmark Romanesque Revival style St Josaphat Catholic Church built in 1900 by and mostly for Polish immigrants settling in the area at that time.  The church is nationally recognized for its stone mullioned windows (said to be the first of its kind in the west) and the fact it is the first Catholic church in America to be completely fireproof and built with steel skeleton construction. Look for the rose window and the towering massive twin bell towers on the west and the dozens of painted stained glass windows.  Notice too the planting areas surrounding the Church and the St. Josaphat Community Park, a victorian park with cobblestone walkways, benches and a fountain in its center on the east.

In 2014, the St Josaphat School Garden and Outdoor Classroom was added to the park on the Belden side.  It consists of a series of raised bed gardens planned, planted and maintained by the St Josaphat Elementary School students and parent volunteers. The St Josaphat School Garden mission is to foster student exploration. inquiry, stewardship and growth through hands-on multi-disciplinary learning opportunities both in the classroom and in the outdoor classroom and garden beds. It was created to inspire a students intellectual, social and emotional exploration with hands on activities by planning, planting, cultivating, harvesting and replanting vegetables, herbs and flowers.

Its goal is to teach students the concepts of stewardship and caretaking and how these principles can be applied to positively impact their school environment and the larger Lincoln Park community. Come meet some students and parents to discuss the plantings and other classroom related projects they worked on all year as part of their Green Initiative theme for the 2015 school year.
