Working hard towards a future of healthy, safe, sustainable and efficiently improved homes in Chicago.
Formed by a network of professionals, advocates, elected officials and socially responsible partners, businesses and residents committed to forwarding the mission of forging a future of sustainable communities in both existing and newly built environments, parks, schools and businesses throughout the region.
How might we engage and enable communities to take more initiative in making their local environments better and more sustainable?
How might we communicate our mission to encourage, advance, support, enable and make aware the importance of healthy homes and communities throughout Chicagoland?
Our mission at Healthy Homes Chicago is to encourage, educate and engage communities and homeowner's towards healthy and sustainable homes concepts and educate them on how to make decisions to implement them into their homes.
The Healthy Homes Chicago initiative originated at the scale of the individual home. How can homeowners gradually implement healthy, sustainably-driven improvements and ideology into their home? We have expanded that vision and are now engaging partners and professionals interested in adopting the green principles at the neighborhood level. We are looking to engage your community and discover your specific vision for what a healthy and sustainable neighborhood might look like on your block. The direction is from the bottom up not the top down. We encourage the use of placemaking neighborhood decision making which comes from the community voice when it comes to revealing a sustainable community’s vision.
“Sustainable communities share a common purpose: places where people thrive to enjoy good health and create a high quality of life. A sustainable community reflects the interdependence of economic, environmental, and social issues by acknowledging that regions, cities, towns and rural lands must continue into the future without diminishing the land, water, air, natural and cultural resources that support them. Housing, transportation and resource conservation are managed in ways that retain the economic, ecological and scenic values of the environment. And they are communities where the consumption of fossil fuels, emissions of greenhouse gases, water resources and pollution are minimized.”
“’Placemaking’ is both an overarching idea and a hands-on tool for improving a neighborhood, city or region. It has the potential to be one of the most transformative ideas of this century.” -Metropolitan Planning Council of Chicago
While the place is important, the “making” builds connections, creates civic engagement, and empowers citizens—in short, it builds social capital. As architect Mark Lakeman of Portland’s City Repair organization puts it, “the physical projects are just an excuse for people to meet their neighbors.” … The relationships that grow out of the “making” are equal to, if not more important than, the places that result.
